Winner announcement Tamayouz Excellence Award 2015

We would like to congratulate the winners of Tamayouz Excellence Award 2015! As we mentioned in our last blog, Tom has recently been in the UK on the judging panel for this award. The First Prize went to Waad Durzi who is studying at London South Bank University for his project; Institute of Archaeology in Cologne, supervised by Mike Evans.

Judging Panel’s comment: "A sophisticated and fascinating architectural intervention in the heart of historical Cologne, the designer has clearly reflected on the delicacy of the intervention into such a sensitive site with a meaningful history for the city. The design is beautifully woven with the texture of the old city, adding layers of meaning and opens up understanding of the historical context.”

Waad Durzi is an Iraqi student studying at London South Bank University who fled from Mosul in Iraq in the 2000s and came to the UK from Amman 3 years ago to study. He was planning to return at the end of October. Instead of the original first prize of a paid masters at The Politecnico di Milano the funds will instead pay for the next stage of his education which is a Part II architecture course at London South Bank University, which he has now started.

This year the award witnessed the participation of 70% of final year students from all architecture departments in Iraqi universities, a total of 105 projects were received this year.
