Tamayouz Award for Iraqi architecture

Tom is just back from Coventry University in the UK where he has been on the judging panel for the Tamayouz Award for Excellence in Graduation Projects. All architectural students of Iraqi nationality are able to submit their final year projects. First prize this year is a fully funded two year Master in Architecture at The Politecnico di Milano in Italy.

It is really impressive and encouraging to see that despite the terrible situation in Iraq today there is still a lot of great work being produced by students throughout the architecture schools of Iraq. A number of these works embrace a sense of optimism and hope for the future of Iraq and use the language of architecture to tackle sensitive political issues head on. It’s both inspiring and humbling when considered against the backdrop of an ongoing civil war in the country.

The judging panel comprises architects from Iraq, Spain, France, the Netherlands, the UK and ourselves from Sweden. The discussions were stimulating with differing views and opinions being expressed in an open and constructive manner. After 8 hours of deliberation consensus was reached. The winner will be announced on the 10th of october 2015.
